about artspin
artspin is the online gallery of digital fine art created by David Janik-Jones.
My digital fine artwork is available as gallery/museum quality giclee prints on textured or smooth archival watercolour paper (up to 300lb), using fine art UV and archival inks that have a rated lifetime of between 70 and 200+ years. I print each work in a limited edition of 10 (or sometimes even less) and do not sell a work again once the edition is sold out. Please visit the store page for more information about ordering and technical specifications.
who is David Janik-Jones?
artspin was founded in 1998 by David Janik-Jones, a digital fine artist and father of two amazing boys. David has worked as a senior print designer, web and interface designer, typographer, goldsmith, and artist throughout North America and the Caribbean.
I create digital fine art for clients using a number of programs: including ArtRage by Ambient Design, Adobe Photoshop, Corel Painter X, Alien Skin Software's Snap Art Photoshop plugin, and Synthetik Software's Studio Artist. I tend to use different programs (or some convoluted combination of the four) depending on what I am trying to achieve in my piece. All are wonderful tools for digital artists allowing them to create digital works by simulating natural art materials and media. Each of them have their strengths and weakenesses, but all of them allow digital artists the freedom to play, experiment and explore many creative opportunities as we create our work.
I currently hold down a full-time job as a web designer and developer, am a former award-winning member of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, former member of the League of Canadian Poets, and co-founder of WidgetMonkeys and founder of Widget Monkey Games. I am also a dealer and collector of ancient Roman coins. I currently live southwest of Toronto in the town of Waterloo, Ontario with my beautiful wife, two great sons, and two great cats (and way too many books to read). Visit my contact page to get in touch we me directly.
why do you do art? who are your favourite artists?
I do what I do because of what Arthur Lismer (1885-1969), Group of Seven, Canada, said ...
"Inside each one of us is an artist.... And that's what an artist is, a child who has never lost the gift of looking at life with curiousity and wonder. Art is not the exclusive possession of those who can draw, write poems, make music or design buildings. It belongs to all those who can see their way through all things with imagination."
Who are my favourite "classic" artists? Milton Avery, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Henry Moore, Alberto Giocometti, Mabel Alvarez, Raoul Dufy, Auguste Rodin, Vincent van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Lucian Freud, Mark Rothko, Edward Hopper, and the Canadians (Thomson, MacDonald, Harris, Jackson, Lismer, Varley, Johnston, Carmichael, and Casson).
What about modern Canadian and international artists? Ivan Murphy (Beckett's site is not Mac friendly), David Grieve, Kathleen Weich, Rachel Taggart, b royalty, William Wray, Sergio Sanchez, Dave McKean, Karim Awad, Virginia May. Many, many others.
What About Private Commissions?
Clients looking to have an individual piece of artwork created for them should contact David Janik-Jones via email or by phone to discuss your needs and the specific details of the project you would like created. These private commissions are printed as giclee prints on museum quality, archival watercolour papers (or other custom stocks) using fine art printing services, based on client request, budget, and the nature of the project. I am most comfortable with creating landscapes (including still life), nudes, and abstract art, although will consider portraiture also.
